Matcha ritual: a mindful pause in your day

Yoli

Yoli founded Sensual Matcha and has been drinking matcha for over 10 years. She tests every recipe on the blog until it works without a café machine.

For our founder Yoli, matcha is much more than a drink. It’s a ritual. That’s why every pack has a QR code linking to a short ritual video.

Preparing your matcha is a few minutes set aside for yourself. Sieve, whisk, pour and enjoy your ritual. 🫶🍵

What you need for your matcha ritual

  • a pack of Sensual Matcha
  • a chasen (bamboo whisk), coming to the shop soon
  • a bamboo scoop (chashaku) or a small spoon
  • a small sieve
  • a matcha bowl, or simply a bowl you enjoy using
  • optional: whisk holder and precision scales
  • Plant milk

Different from green tea bags

With a green tea bag, the leaves steep in water for a few minutes and are then discarded. Your cup contains only what has dissolved in that time. Matcha is different. You stir the finely ground leaf into water and drink it whole, with everything it contains. That’s why your bowl is a rich green rather than clear.

What matcha contains

Yes, matcha contains caffeine too. In 2024, the Bavarian State Office for Health and Food Safety tested forty-seven samples and found 1.4 to 3.6 grams per 100 grams of powder. For the 3 grams you use in a latte, that’s about 42 to 108 milligrams.

There are also polyphenols, plant compounds found in fruit, vegetables and nuts. And L-theanine, an amino acid found mainly in the tea plant. It is one reason good matcha tastes mellow and slightly sweet. This comes from the shade: the plants are covered for weeks before harvest, and the leaves develop more amino acids and fewer astringent tannins.

That’s what you taste when you whisk your bowl: creamy, mild and not at all bitter.
